The diverse, vibrant and colourful city of Budapest has a nightlife to match. The city has developed a reputation as one of the top European cities for some quality partying with a great range of cafes, bars and clubs to suit all tastes.
From bohemian bars to modern clubs, street cafes to sophisticated restaurants, the Hungarian capital Budapest has the perfect package of nightlife.
At any time of year, weekend or week day, Budapest has plenty of exciting nightlife to discover.
Anyone with a serious interest in what entertainment the city has to offer after dark will be delighted to know what there is no restrictions on the opening times so, especially at the weekend, many venues can be open until dawn ensuring the maximum time possible to spend enjoying yourself.
Another plus is that entry charges and the price of drinks are generally low so heading to Budapest for a weekend of partying shouldn`t break the bank. Top club nights are popular but don`t usually require booking ahead unless you are in a large group - however we do recommend that you check a day in advance to avoid disappointment. Open-air clubs and bars are a summer attraction in the South Buda area, close to the university district. Some even have a small pool for a refreshing dip on a hot evening.
For an authentic and unique Budapest nightlife experience try a Ruin Pub. `Rom kocsma` means, literally, a pub in a ruin. These pubs can be found in formerly abandoned buildings or old houses which have been taken over and turned into characterful, but not modernised, pubs. These stylish and retro pubs are popular hang outs for a mix of local contemporary designers and artists, tourists and Budapest-based ex-pats.
The majority of Ruin Pubs are located in the Budapest's District VII area, which was the former Jewish Ghetto during 1944-1945.
Some ruin pubs are temporary but others have survived for several years. They can also be good places to find the best local bands.
One of the most popular and well-known and longest established (since 2004) Ruin Pub is Szimpla Kert in Kazinczy utca, voted 3rd. best bar in the world in a 2012 Lonely Planet public vote.

If music and festivals are your thing then time your visit to Budapest to include the Sziget Festival, an annual week-long extravaganza set on an island on the River Danube. Five stages host a rich variety of pop and rock bands that appeal to a generally hip, young audience. Expect the city`s nightlife to be even livelier during Sziget when the atmosphere spills out onto the streets.
Remember too that Hungary has many local tipples you will want to try. There are quality Hungarian beers, wines and spirits that are all worth exploring.
Budapest is the perfect destination for cultural or activity weekends. Whichever you choose you know there is a buzzing nightlife to enjoy at the end of the day.
